Habits
Good habits
Good habits to start with are reading for ten minutes after breakfast, walking for ten minutes after lunch, and putting your phone on its charger at 10 PM. Below is a list of 24 good daily habits like these, in six groups. Each one has a time or an amount in it, so you can check whether you did it.

Add up your daily habits
The tool below adds up the minutes of the daily habits you pick. Tap a habit to add it. You see the minutes a day, and the hours those minutes come to over a year.
Tap a habit to add it or take it out.
A day
10m
1 habit. That is 1h 10m a week.
A year, done every day
about 61 hours
Nobody does every single day, so take this as the most it can be.

The minutes are our estimates. Your real minutes come from your day. Nothing you enter leaves this page.
How to start
How to pick a good habit and start it
Picking a good habit is easier when you pick only one. Here are five steps to start it.
- Pick one habit. Choose the one you want most. The others can wait a few weeks.
- Write it with a time or an amount. You cannot check “read more” at the end of the day. You can check “read for ten minutes after breakfast”.
- Put it right after something you already do. Breakfast, lunch and brushing your teeth happen every day, so they remind you. This is called habit stacking.
- Make it small enough for a bad day. If ten minutes is too much when you are tired, do two. A short day still counts.
- Mark each day you did it. A tick on a calendar is enough, or use the habit tracker template. If you miss a day, do it the next day.
Small habits add up. Ten minutes a day, every day for a year, is about 61 hours. The page on the power of consistency shows the sum. When your first habit happens without a reminder, go back to the list and add a second.
What studies found
What makes a good habit stick?
A good habit is more likely to stick when it is simple, when you repeat it for weeks, and when you keep track of it. Here is what three studies found.
A simple habit formed in weeks. A bigger one took months.
One study followed people who had joined a gym, and hospital workers who had to wash their hands. Hand washing turned into a steady habit in a couple of weeks. Going to the gym took about 4 to 7 months (Buyalskaya and colleagues, 2023). The researchers say one possible reason is that hand washing is simpler, and happens many times a day.
A habit takes weeks or months, and a missed day does not undo it.
In another study, people each picked one small thing to eat, drink or do every day, at the same point in the day, such as after breakfast. It took them between 18 and 254 days before it felt automatic. Missing one day made no real difference (Lally and colleagues, 2010). The page on how long it takes to form a habit has the full numbers, and habit formation explains how a habit is built.
People who keep track do better at reaching their goals.
A research team put together more than a hundred experiments in which some people were asked to keep track of their progress toward a goal. On average, those people did better at reaching their goals than people who were not asked to. Keeping track helped more when people wrote it down (Harkin and colleagues, 2016). If the habit you want is to stop doing something, see how long it takes to break a habit.
The test
How do you know a good habit is sticking?
The test
You did your habit on five days out of seven, without a reminder
for three weeks in a row.
It is easy to think you kept a habit more often than you did. You remember the mornings you did it, and you forget the mornings you skipped.
A good way to check is to count the minutes from what you write or say about your day. Then you do not have to remember to tick anything. Most journaling apps only ask how your day felt. They do not show on how many days your ten minutes of reading really happened.
One app built for this is Think in Numbers, a smart journaling app with time tracking built in.
You write or say your day in your own words, as it happens or all at once. The app reads what you wrote and counts the hours that went to each part of it: the minutes each habit got, work, sleep, your phone, and the time you never mentioned (shown as unaccounted). Then it shows those hours over days and weeks. So you can see on how many days your habit happened this week, and how many minutes it got. Add your ten minutes of reading as a daily habit. On each day the minutes you wrote reach it, the app ticks it off.

3. It shows your week

Questions
Questions people ask.
What are good habits?
Good habits are small things you do on most days without having to decide each time. Examples: reading for ten minutes after breakfast, a ten-minute walk after lunch, and putting your phone on its charger at 10 PM.
What are good daily habits to start with?
Good daily habits to start with are short and tied to something you already do. Three examples: make your bed when you get up, walk for ten minutes after lunch, and plan tomorrow before you stop work.
How many habits should you start at once?
Start one habit at a time. When you do it on most days without a reminder, add the next one. Five new habits on the same Monday are hard to keep up.
How long does a good habit take to stick?
A good habit takes weeks or months to stick, not days. In one study, small daily habits took between 18 and 254 days to become automatic. Missing one day did not undo them.
Is there an app to keep track of good habits?
A paper calendar and a pen are enough to keep track of a habit: put a tick on each day you did it. If you want an app, look for one that shows how many minutes the habit really got, not only a tick. One app built for this is Think in Numbers, a smart journaling app with time tracking built in. Think in Numbers counts the minutes each habit got from what you write or say about your day, ticks off each habit your day shows you did, and keeps a streak and a reminder for each habit.
