The math

A week, in hours, minutes and seconds.

Every week figure starts from one multiplication: 24 hours times 7 days is 168 hours. The rest of the table follows from that number.

The average week

Where the average American's 168 hours go.

The average American age 15 and over spends about 63.2 hours a week asleep, 36.1 hours on leisure and 23.2 hours working. These figures come from the 2025 American Time Use Survey, multiplied by seven days.

The survey averages everyone, including people who do not work, over every day of the year. That is why work looks small here. Television alone takes 18.3 hours of the average week.

Work

A full-time worker's week.

Full-time workers worked 8.45 hours on an average weekday they worked, in the 2025 American Time Use Survey. Five of those weekdays come to 42.25 hours of work.

Weekends are different. On an average weekend day, 29.6% of full-time workers worked, for 5.49 hours. The survey counts only the work itself, not the commute.

A common full-time schedule is 40 hours. That is 23.8 percent of the week. Take the average sleep and the weekday work out of 168, and about 62.5 hours are left for everything else. The two averages come from different groups, so read that as a rough shape, not a rule.

The missing hours

Why a week feels shorter than 168 hours.

A week feels shorter than 168 hours because short stretches go unnoticed. Ten minutes on the phone, a wait, a detour: none of them get written down, and they add up.

The American Time Use Survey finds these hours by asking people to go through yesterday in order. You can do the same for yourself with a time audit and a printable time log. Whatever you cannot place is your unaccounted time.

Time journaling does this every day, in plain words. You write or say what you did, and the entry becomes hours by category.
