How long does it take to read 100 pages?
Reading 100 pages takes about 2 hours, for an average reader and an ordinary book. The sum: an ordinary page holds about 278 words, so 100 pages are 27,800 words. An average adult reads 238 words a minute, and 27,800 divided by 238 is about 117 minutes.

How do you work out the time for 100 pages?
The time for 100 pages comes from three numbers: the pages, the words on one page, and the words you read in a minute. You multiply the pages by the words on a page. Then you divide by your words a minute.
For an average reader that comes to 1h 57m of reading. You do not have to do it in one sitting. Two made-up readers show how.
Anna reads her 100 pages on a Sunday afternoon, with a break in the middle. She is done the same day. Ben reads for 20 minutes every evening. 117 minutes divided by 20 is a little under six, so Ben finishes on the sixth evening. Both of them read for the same two hours.
The table shows the time for other numbers of pages, for a slow, an average and a fast reader. The speeds come from a large review of studies of reading speed. It found that most adults read between 175 and 300 words a minute.
| Pages | Slow reader175 words a minute | Average reader238 words a minute | Fast reader300 words a minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 1h 19m | 58m | 46m |
| 100 | 2h 39m | 1h 57m | 1h 33m |
| 200 | 5h 18m | 3h 54m | 3h 5m |
| 300 | 7h 57m | 5h 50m | 4h 38m |
| 400 | 10h 35m | 7h 47m | 6h 11m |
| 500 | 13h 14m | 9h 44m | 7h 43m |
Every time in the table is reading time only, for a page of 278 words.

How long will your pages take you?
The counter below does the same sum with your numbers. Put in your pages and the words you read in a minute. If you do not know your speed, the reading speed test measures it. Then set the minutes you read a day, and the counter shows the days.
The average adult reads 238 words a minute. To find your own speed, take the reading speed test.
An ordinary page holds about 278 words. Leave this as it is if you do not want to count.
Your reading time, about

100 pages × 278 words is 27,800 words. Divided by 238 words a minute, that is about 117 minutes.

One square is one day of reading. The last day may be a short one.
100 pages: about 1h 57m of reading, or 6 days at 20 minutes a day.
This counts reading time only, with no breaks. Nothing you enter leaves this page.
A longer read
How long does it take to read 300 pages?
Reading 300 pages takes about 5h 50m at an average speed. The sum is the same as before. 300 pages are 83,400 words, and 83,400 divided by 238 is about 350 minutes.
At 30 minutes a day, that is 12 days. At an hour a day, it is six days. A slow reader needs about 7h 57m for the same pages, and a fast reader about 4h 38m.
A whole book
How long does it take to read a book?
Reading a book takes about 7h 30m, if it is a novel of average length and you read at an average speed. That figure comes from a small study inside the same review.
In that study, 48 people who read a lot each timed themselves reading one book. The books were novels. On average they had 385 pages and 107,000 words. 107,000 words divided by 238 words a minute is about 450 minutes.
This page takes its words on a page from the same books: 107,000 words divided by 385 pages is about 278 words a page.
A real book fits the sum. The review reports that a company that makes e-readers looked at the novel Mockingjay, which has 101,000 words. Its average reader finished the book in seven hours.
At 20 minutes a day, those hours take 23 days. To finish more books in a year, see how to read more.

What changes how long 100 pages take?
Three things change the time for 100 pages: how many words are on the page, what kind of book it is, and where you read it.
The size of the page.
A page with small print holds more words, so it takes longer. To find the number for your book, count the words in five full lines. Divide by five, then multiply by the number of lines on a page. If your page holds 400 words, then 100 pages are 40,000 words, and an average reader needs about 2h 48m.
The kind of book.
Novels go a little faster. The review found an average of 260 words a minute for novels and 238 for other books. At the speed for novels, 100 pages take about 1h 47m. Reading out loud is slower, at about 183 words a minute. Then 100 pages take about 2h 32m.
Where you read.
Reading at home can take much longer than the sum says. The review describes a study in which students read one chapter of a textbook. Students who read it in a room at the university, with a researcher watching, took 34 minutes. Students who read it at home took 1h 9m. Both groups did equally well on a quiz about the chapter. The review says that people who read with nobody watching rarely keep their mind on the page the whole time.
So give yourself more time than the sum says. If you want to get through your pages sooner, see how to read faster.
The test
How do you find out how long your own reading takes?
The test
You know how many minutes 100 pages take you, from days when you really read
Write down the minutes and the pages each day, for 2 weeks.
The sum gives the time for an average reader. Your own time is hard to know, because nobody remembers how many minutes last week’s chapters took.
A good way to check is to write or say how long you read each day, like “read for twenty minutes, to page 60”. Most journaling apps only ask how your day felt. They do not add up the minutes you spent reading.
One app built for this is Think in Numbers, a smart journaling app with time tracking built in.
You write or say your day in your own words, as it happens or all at once. The app reads what you wrote and counts the hours that went to each part of it: your reading, your work, your phone, and the time you never mentioned (shown as unaccounted). Then it shows those hours over days and weeks. So you can see how many minutes you read each day, and how many it took to finish the book. Add reading as a daily habit for those weeks. On each day your words show you read, the app ticks it off.

How can I keep track of how long I read each day?
A bookmark and a pencil work: write the date and the minutes on the bookmark each time you stop. If you want an app, look for one that adds the minutes up for you. One app built for this is Think in Numbers, a smart journaling app with time tracking built in. Think in Numbers counts your reading time from what you write or say about your day, and adds it up by week.
