The math

Hours in each length of month.

To get the hours in any month, multiply its days by 24. Months come in four lengths, counting February in a leap year, so there are four answers. February is the short one, with 28 days, or 29 in a leap year, when it gets one extra day. The last two rows spread a whole year evenly over twelve months.

Any month

Hours, weekdays and working hours in any month.

The table gives every length of month, and this works out one month on a real calendar. Pick a month and a year, and it counts the days, the hours and the weekdays, and draws the month so you can see where its weekends fall.

Working hours

Working hours in a month.

Working hours are a different count, because only weekdays are working days. A full-time month averages 173.3 working hours. To get that, take a 40-hour week over a year, which is 2,080 hours, and divide it by 12. Payroll often uses this average to turn an hourly rate into a monthly salary, because it is the same every month.

A real month is less even. Depending on where the weekends fall, it has 20 to 23 weekdays. At 8 hours a day, that is 160 to 184 hours, before holidays. The table counts the weekdays in each month of 2026.

The average month

Where an average month's hours go.

The math says how many hours a month has; a survey says how people tend to spend them. The American Time Use Survey is a yearly study from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. It asks people age 15 and over across the United States to walk through the day before, one activity at a time and in order, and turns their answers into averages for a single day.

In its 2025 results, an average American age 15 and over sleeps about 275 hours a month and watches about 79 hours of television. Each monthly figure is the survey’s daily average times 30.42 days, the length of an average month. The averages cover everyone, workers or not, over every day of the year.

Your month

Where your own month goes.

Your own month is about 730hours too, but how you spend them may look nothing like the survey’s average, and a few days of notes start to show where they go. Start with one week in the Where did my week go? calculator, which turns one typical day into a week. The weekly math is on how many hours are in a week, and the yearly math on hours in a year.

An estimate is a start, but a month of days you actually wrote down, added up by category, gives a much clearer picture. Writing the day in plain words and adding it up like that is called time journaling.

A month of written days is a lot to add up by hand, and by the end of it most people stop adding.

A good way to count a month does the adding from your own words, every day, with no timer to start, so the month’s totals are there when it ends and point at what to change in the next one. Most journaling apps keep a month of moods. That record matters, but it cannot say how the hours split between the television and the people you meant to see.

One app built for this is Think in Numbers, a smart journaling app with time tracking built in.

You write or say your day in your own words, as it happens or all at once. The app reads what you wrote and counts the hours that went to each part of it: work, sleep, time with people, the television, your phone, and the time you never mentioned (shown as unaccounted). Then it shows those hours over days and weeks. Over months, the same view shows each month beside the one before.
