How long does it take to write a book?
Writing the first draft of a book takes about 160 days, if the book is 80,000 words long and you write 500 words a day. The sum is the words in the book divided by the words you write each day. Rewriting comes after that, and it takes more time.

How do you work out how long a book will take?
A book’s writing time comes from three numbers: how many words the book needs, how many words you write on a writing day, and how many days a week you write. This page counts a first draft, which is the whole book written once, from the first page to the last, before you fix anything.
Two made-up writers show how the sum works. Both want to write a novel of 80,000 words.
Nora writes 500 words every day, before work. 80,000 divided by 500 is 160. So Nora needs 160 days. That is about 23 weeks, or a little over five months.
Ben writes more each time he sits down. He writes 1,000 words on Saturday and the same on Sunday, and nothing on the other days. That is 2,000 words a week, so his book takes 40 weeks, which is about nine months.
Nora writes half as much as Ben in one sitting. But she finishes about 17 weeks sooner, because she writes every day. How many days you write matters as much as how many words you write.
The table shows the days a first draft takes if you write every day.
| Words a day | 50,000 words | 80,000 words | 100,000 words |
|---|---|---|---|
| 250 | 200 days | 320 days | 400 days |
| 500 | 100 days | 160 days | 200 days |
| 1,000 | 50 days | 80 days | 100 days |
| 2,000 | 25 days | 40 days | 50 days |

When will your first draft be finished?
The planner below does the same sum with your numbers. Set the length of your book, the words you write on a writing day, and the days a week you write. It shows the writing days and a finish date.
Your first draft takes
160 writing days
80,000 words ÷ 500 words a day. At 7 days a week, that is about 23 weeks.
If you start today, your first draft is done around
…
One square is one week
That is 3,500 words a week.
80,000 words at 500 words a day: 160 writing days.
This is a plan for a first draft. Rewriting is not counted. Nothing you enter leaves this page.

How many words are in a book?
A novel for adults should be about 80,000 to 89,999 words, according to a guide in Writer’s Digest, a magazine for writers. The guide is advice for people who are about to send a book to a literary agent. It gives a range for other kinds of book too.
| Kind of book | Words |
|---|---|
| Novel for adults | 80,000 to 89,999 |
| Memoir | 80,000 to 89,999 |
| Young adult novel | 55,000 to 79,999 |
| Science fiction or fantasy novel | 100,000 to 115,000 |

How long does it take to write 1,000 words?
Typing 1,000 words takes about 19 minutes at an average typing speed. Writing that many new words takes longer, because you have to think of them first.
The typing speed comes from a study of people who took a typing test online. Their average speed was 52 words a minute (Dhakal and colleagues, 2018). But they were copying sentences shown on the screen.
We found no study that gives a fair average for writing new words. To measure your own speed, write for one hour, count the words, and find your row in the table.
| Words in an hour | 1,000 words take | A draft of 80,000 words takes |
|---|---|---|
| 250 | 4 hours | 320 hours |
| 500 | 2 hours | 160 hours |
| 1,000 | 1 hour | 80 hours |

How many hours a week do writers write?
The biggest group of writers in one large survey wrote about 10 hours a week. The survey asked authors who publish their own books, and more than half of that group also had a day job (Written Word Media’s author survey, 2022). These are the authors’ own reports, and the company that ran the survey says it is not a scientific study.
Ten hours a week is enough to write a book. At 500 words an hour, ten hours is 5,000 words a week. A draft of 80,000 words then takes 16 weeks.
A much faster draft is possible too. National Novel Writing Month was a yearly challenge to write 50,000 words in 30 days, which is 1,667 words a day. At its height, hundreds of thousands of writers took part (Publishers Weekly, 2025).
How to do it
How to finish a first draft
You finish a first draft by writing a small, fixed number of words on most days, and by leaving the fixing for later. Three things help.
Pick a number you can do on a bad day.
If 500 words is too much after a long day, choose 250. The table above shows that a draft of 80,000 words still gets done in under a year.
Give writing one fixed time.
Choose one time of day for writing and keep it, such as the hour before work. A fixed time helps writing become a habit, and a habit takes weeks to form.
Do not fix the draft while you write it.
Write the next part and leave the mistakes where they are. You will fix them when the whole draft is done. Freewriting is good practice for this.
A finished first draft is not a finished book. Rewriting and editing come next. We found no reliable count of how long they take, so this page gives none.
The test
How do you know your book is on track?
The test
Your word count is where the sum says it should be, and you wrote on the days you planned
Checked every Sunday, for 4 weeks in a row.
A writing plan is easy to make and hard to check, because the days you skipped are easy to forget.
A good way to check is to count your writing hours from what you write or say about your day, so you never have to start a timer. Most journaling apps only ask how your day felt. They do not show how many hours went to your book this week.
One app built for this is Think in Numbers, a smart journaling app with time tracking built in.
You write or say your day in your own words, as it happens or all at once. The app reads what you wrote and counts the hours that went to each part of it: your writing, work, sleep, your phone, and the time you never mentioned (shown as unaccounted). Then it shows those hours over days and weeks. So you can see how many hours you really wrote each week, next to the word count you keep yourself. Add your writing days as a habit, with a reminder. When your day shows you wrote, the app ticks it off and your streak goes on.

How many words should I write a day?
Write the number of words you can still manage on a bad day. A draft of 80,000 words takes 160 days at 500 words a day. At 250 words a day it takes 320 days, which is still under a year.
Can you write a book in a month?
You can write a short first draft in a month. National Novel Writing Month asked people to write 50,000 words in 30 days, which is 1,667 words a day. At its height, hundreds of thousands of writers took part. The rewriting still comes after that month.
Is there an app to track my writing time?
A wall calendar works: write the day’s word count on every day you wrote. If you want an app, look for one that counts your writing hours from what you already write about your day. One app built for this is Think in Numbers, a smart journaling app with time tracking built in. Think in Numbers reads what you write or say about your day and adds up your hours of writing each week. In the app, your writing days can be a habit, ticked off from what you write about your day.
