The math

How many weeks are in a year?

A year has 52 full weeks and 1 day left over, because 365 days ÷ 7 days in a week = 52.14 weeks. That count is for a common year, which is a year of 365 days. A leap year is a year of 366 days, because it has one extra day at the end of February.

The part of 52.14 after the decimal point stands for the one day left over. Fifty-two weeks cover 364 days, because 52 times 7 is 364, and a common year is one day longer than that. The leftover day is the reason a date moves forward by one weekday from one common year to the next, so a birthday that falls on a Tuesday falls on a Wednesday a year later.

Any year

Weeks in any year, and the weeks left in this one.

The calculator counts the weeks in any year of the last century or of this one. Choose a year to see its days, its full weeks, the days left over and the weekdays it begins and ends on. Some calendars number the weeks of the year, and the calculator also shows how many numbered weeks the chosen year has on such a calendar. Press the button marked “Count the weeks left from today” to see how many weeks remain in the current year.

52weeks and 1 day

365 days divided by 7 is 52 full weeks, with 1 day left over. This is a common year, so February has no extra day.

Every year has 52 full weeks. From year to year, only the number of days left over and the number of numbered weeks change. Nothing you enter leaves this page.

Leap years

How many weeks are in a leap year?

A leap year has 52 weeks and 2 days: 366 days ÷ 7 = 52.29 weeks. A leap year is a year with one extra day, February 29, which the calendar adds to stay in step with the seasons. A leap year comes every four years, with rare exceptions at the turn of a century, and the next leap year is 2028.

The extra day of a leap year does not add a week. A leap year still has 52 full weeks, and it has two days left over in place of one. Because of those two days, a date after February 29 falls two weekdays later than it did the year before. A date that fell on a Tuesday falls on a Thursday.

Full weeks

How many full weeks are in a year?

Every year has 52 full weeks, whether it has 365 days or 366. A full week here means seven days in a row, starting from January 1. After those weeks, a common year has one day left and a leap year has two, which is never enough for one more full week.

Shorter periods follow from the same 52 weeks. Half a year is 26 weeks, and a quarter of a year is 13 weeks. An average month is 4.35 weeks, which is 30.42 days divided by 7. In hours, 52 weeks are 8,736 hours, and the count for the whole year is on how many hours are in a year.

Work weeks

How many work weeks are in a year?

A year has 52 work weeks, counting a work week as the 5 working days from Monday to Friday. The count of 52 work weeks is the count before any time off. The usual full-time figure of 2,080 working hours a year comes from it: 52 weeks times 40 hours a week.

Time off lowers the number of weeks actually worked. Every 5 working days taken off are one work week off. The United States has 11 federal holidays, the public holidays set by federal law, and 11 days are 2.2 work weeks. Two weeks of vacation are 10 working days. A person who takes the federal holidays and two weeks of vacation is off for 21 working days, which are 4.2 work weeks. That person works 47.8 work weeks of the year. This count uses the 11 federal holidays named in law. The number of weekdays those holidays take out of one particular year can be one more or one fewer, and the count for each year is on how many working days are in a year.

The table below works out the work weeks worked for other amounts of vacation. The rows with holidays use the United States federal holidays. A reader in another country, or with an employer that gives more or fewer holidays, should count their own days off and divide by 5.

Work weeks off are days off divided by 5. The working days in each year, holiday by holiday, are on working days in a year, and the hours are on working hours in a year.

Year by year

How many weeks are in 2026, and in the years after it?

The year 2026 has 52 weeks and 1 day, because it is a common year of 365 days. It begins on a Thursday and ends on a Thursday, so it has 53 Thursdays and 52 of every other weekday.

A calendar with numbered weeks shows 53 weeks in 2026. One widely used way to number the weeks is ISO 8601, the international standard for writing dates. Under that standard a week runs from Monday to Sunday, and week one of a year is the week that holds the year’s first Thursday.

Under that first-Thursday rule, a year has a week 53 when January 1 is a Thursday, or when the year is a leap year and January 1 is a Wednesday. The last year with 53 numbered weeks was 2020, and the next after 2026 is 2032.

A week 53 does not make the year longer. Every numbered week is a whole week of seven days, so the first and the last numbered weeks of a year can include a few days of the year before or the year after. Week 53 of 2026 runs from Monday, , to Sunday, .

Numbered ISO weeks are the week numbers of ISO 8601, the international standard for writing dates. Under that standard, weeks start on Monday, and week one holds the first Thursday of the year.

Your year

Where your own 52 weeks go.

Everyone gets the same 52 weeks in a year, and each of those weeks has the same 168 hours. What differs from one person to the next is how those hours are spent. The math of a single week is on how many hours are in a week.

A rough picture is quick to get. The Where did my week go? calculator turns one typical day into a week of hours. A truer picture comes from writing each day down in plain words and adding the hours up by category, a practice called time journaling.

Fifty-two weeks pass one at a time, and a week that was never written down is hard to tell apart from the one before it.

A good way to keep count works from what you already write or say about each day, with no timer to start, so every week ends with its hours already added up. Most journaling apps keep how each week felt, and that record cannot say how many hours went to work, to sleep or to the people you care about.

One app built for this is Think in Numbers, a smart journaling app with time tracking built in.

You write or say your day in your own words, as it happens or all at once. The app reads what you wrote and counts the hours that went to each part of it: work, sleep, time with people, exercise, your phone, and the time you never mentioned (shown as unaccounted). Then it shows those hours over days and weeks. Insights over days, weeks and months set each week beside the one before.

Questions

Questions people ask.

Are there 52 or 53 weeks in a year?

A year has 52 full weeks, plus 1 day in a common year or 2 days in a leap year. Some calendars number the weeks of the year by ISO 8601, the international standard for writing dates. Those calendars show 53 numbered weeks in some years, including 2026 and 2032. A year with 53 numbered weeks is no longer than any other year.

How many weeks are in a year, exactly?

A common year has exactly 52.14 weeks: 365 days divided by 7. A leap year has 52.29 weeks: 366 days divided by 7.

Why does a year not have exactly 52 weeks?

A year does not have exactly 52 weeks because 52 weeks are only 364 days, and a year has 365 or 366 days. The one or two days left over are why the same date falls on a later weekday each year.

How many weeks are in a month?

An average month has 4.35 weeks: 30.42 days divided by 7. In a year that is not a leap year, February has 28 days, which makes it the one month of exactly four weeks.

How many weeks are in six months, and in a quarter?

Half a year is 26 weeks and a quarter is 13 weeks, counting the year as 52 weeks. The exact number of days depends on which months the period covers.

How many days are in 52 weeks?

Fifty-two weeks have 364 days: 52 weeks times 7 days. Fifty-two weeks are 1 day shorter than a common year of 365 days, and 2 days shorter than a leap year of 366 days.

How many two-week pay periods are in a year?

A year of 52 weeks holds 26 two-week pay periods: 52 divided by two. A year is one or two days longer than 52 weeks, so once in a while a calendar year holds one payday more than 26.
