The two counts
How many working hours are in a month?
A full-time month has 173.3 working hours on average, and 160 to 184 working hours when one month of 2026 is counted exactly. The average starts from a full-time year, which is 40 hours a week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours. Sharing that year equally among the 12 months gives 173.3 hours a month. An employer that pays the same salary every month is, in effect, paying for this average month.
The exact count looks at one month on the calendar and multiplies its weekdays, the days from Monday to Friday, by the hours in a workday. A month of 2026 has between 20 and 23 weekdays, so at 8 hours a day it holds between 160 and 184 working hours. The table below shows the four numbers of weekdays a month of 2026 can have.
| Months of 2026 | Weekdays | Working hours |
|---|---|---|
| February | 20 | 160 |
| May, August and November | 21 | 168 |
| January, March, April, June, September and October | 22 | 176 |
| July and December | 23 | 184 |
| The average month2,080 hours ÷ 12 | 21.67 | 173.3 |
Working hours are the weekdays at 8 hours each, with no holidays or days off taken out. The average month counts a year as 52 weeks, which is 260 weekdays.
Month by month
Working hours by month in 2026.
Working hours by month in 2026 run from 160 in February to 184 in July and December, for a week of 40 hours worked from Monday to Friday. Over the whole year the months add up to 2,088 hours, because 2026 has 261 weekdays. That total is one workday of 8 hours more than the round figure of 2,080 hours, and it puts the monthly average for 2026 at 174 hours.
The last two columns of the table below take out the United States federal holidays. A federal holiday is one of the 11 days that federal law gives federal employees as paid days off, such as Thanksgiving Day. A private employer chooses its own paid holidays. In 2026, federal workers get a weekday off for each of the 11 holidays, so the year has 88 fewer working hours. Other countries have different public holidays, and for those countries the weekdays and working hours columns still apply.
| Month | Weekdays | Working hours | Federal holidays | Hours after holidays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 22 | 176 | 2 | 160 |
| February | 20 | 160 | 1 | 152 |
| March | 22 | 176 | 0 | 176 |
| April | 22 | 176 | 0 | 176 |
| May | 21 | 168 | 1 | 160 |
| June | 22 | 176 | 1 | 168 |
| July | 23 | 184 | 1 | 176 |
| August | 21 | 168 | 0 | 168 |
| September | 22 | 176 | 1 | 168 |
| October | 22 | 176 | 1 | 168 |

| December | 23 | 184 | 1 | 176 |
| The whole year | 261 | 2,088 | 11 | 2,000 |
Working hours are the weekdays × 8 hours a day. The working days of each year, with each holiday by name, are on the page about working days in a year.
Days, not hours
How many work days are in a month?
A month has 20 to 23 work days, counting Monday to Friday. The count depends on the length of the month and on the day of the week it starts on. Four full weeks make 20 work days, and that is all a February of 28 days can hold. Every other month is longer than four weeks, by two or three days in most cases, and each of those days that lands between Monday and Friday is one more work day.
On average, a month of 2026 has 21.75 work days: 261 weekdays ÷ 12 months. With the 11 federal holidays taken out, the year has 250 working days, and the average month has 20.83 working days. The round full-time year of 260 weekdays, which the average month in the table above uses, gives a slightly lower figure: 21.67 weekdays a month.
Holidays change single months more than they change the average. November 2026 has 21 weekdays and two federal holidays, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Day, so it has 19 working days. March and April have no federal holiday, and each keeps all 22 of its weekdays.
Other schedules
Working hours in a month for other weekly schedules.
Working hours in a month come from two formulas, whatever the weekly schedule. For the average month, multiply the hours in the week by 52 and divide by 12. For a real month, divide the hours in the week by five to get the hours in one day, then multiply by the weekdays in that month.
A week of 35 hours, for example, is 7 hours a day. That week comes to 151.7 working hours in an average month, and to 140 working hours in February 2026. Which weekly schedule counts as full time depends on who defines it, and the page on how many hours is full time sets out the official definitions.
| Hours a week | Hours a day | Hours in an average month | Hours in a month of 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 hours | 6 | 130 | 120 to 138 |
| 32 hours | 6.4 | 138.7 | 128 to 147.2 |
| 35 hours | 7 | 151.7 | 140 to 161 |
| 37.5 hours | 7.5 | 162.5 | 150 to 172.5 |
| 40 hours | 8 | 173.3 | 160 to 184 |
The “Hours a day” column spreads the week over five days. The “Hours in a month of 2026” column runs from a month of 20 weekdays to a month of 23 weekdays, before holidays and days off.
One day
How many hours a day is 40 hours a week?
Forty hours a week is 8 hours a day when the week is worked from Monday to Friday: 40 hours ÷ 5 days. A workday of 8 hours is a third of the 24 hours in a day. The same 40 hours can be spread over more or fewer days, and the table below shows the hours in one workday in each case.
| Days worked in the week | Hours a day |
|---|---|
| 4 daysA four-day week of long days | 10h |
| 5 daysMonday to Friday, the usual full-time week | 8h |
| 6 daysSix shorter days | 6h 40m |
| 7 daysEvery day of the week | 5h 43m |
Each figure is 40 hours divided by the days worked, shown in hours and minutes.
Your own month
Work out the working hours in your own month.
Your own month depends on the hours in your week, the month you are asking about and the days you have off in it. Enter the hours you work in a week and choose a month and a year. The calculator counts the weekdays in that month, takes out the United States federal holidays if you ask it to, and shows the working days and the working hours beside the average month for the same week.
Spread over Monday to Friday, that is 8 hours a day.
January 2026 has 2 weekdays off for federal holidays.

The federal holidays are those of the United States. The calculator counts the hours on your schedule, not the hours you really work. Nothing you enter leaves this page.
Pay
Which monthly figure a paycheck is worked out from.
A monthly salary that is the same every month matches the average of 173.3 hours, not the count of any one month. To turn a monthly salary into an hourly rate, divide the salary by 173.3. To turn an hourly rate into a monthly salary, multiply the rate by the same number. The result is the same in February as in July, although July 2026 has 3 more weekdays than February.
A person paid by the hour is paid for the exact count of hours worked in each month. For a week of 40 hours, February 2026 pays for 160 hours and July pays for 184, a difference of 24 hours between the two months, before any unpaid holiday is taken out.
The hours of a whole month, nights and weekends included, are on the page about hours in a month, and a full year of work is added up on working hours in a year.
Your own hours
The hours you were scheduled and the hours you worked.
The hours you were scheduled for a month are what every table on this page counts, and the hours you worked can be a different number. A month of 176 scheduled hours grows when calls run late and a report gets finished on a Sunday, and it shrinks when an afternoon goes to an appointment. None of those changes show on a calendar.
The way to know your real month is to write down what you did each day, in plain words, and add up the hours by category. That habit is called time journaling. For a quick first estimate, the Where did my week go? calculator builds a week out of one typical day.
Adding up one working day by hand is easy, but a month has about twenty of them, and the adding is the part people give up on.
A good way to count a working month reads the hours from what you already write or say about each day, so nothing has to be started, stopped or filled in afterwards. Most journaling apps record how a month at work felt and never count its hours, so there is nothing to set beside the hours you are paid for.
One app built for this is Think in Numbers, a smart journaling app with time tracking built in.
You write or say your day in your own words, as it happens or all at once. The app reads what you wrote and counts the hours that went to each part of it: work, the commute, sleep, time with people, your phone, and the time you never mentioned (shown as unaccounted). Then it shows those hours over days and weeks. Insights over days, weeks and months set each working month beside the one before.
