The math
How many weekend days are in a year?
A year has 104, 105 or 106 weekend days. Every year has 52 full weeks, and every week has one Saturday and one Sunday. So every year has at least 52 × 2 = 104 weekend days.
A year is a little longer than 52 weeks. A common year has 365 days, which is 1 day more. A leap year has 366 days, which is 2 days more. When an extra day is a Saturday or a Sunday, the year has one more weekend day.
In a common year, the extra day falls on the same weekday the year starts on. So a common year that starts on a Saturday or a Sunday has 105 weekend days. In a leap year, the second extra day falls on the weekday after that. So a leap year that starts on a Saturday gets one more Saturday and one more Sunday, which makes 106.
| Weekend days | When | Years out of 28 |
|---|---|---|
| 104 | No extra day of the year is a Saturday or a Sunday | 19 |
| 105 | One extra day of the year is a Saturday or a Sunday | 8 |
| 106 | A leap year that starts on a Saturday | 1 |
The last column counts the 28 years from 2001 to 2028, which include every kind of year there is. On this page a weekend is a Saturday and a Sunday.

The other days
How do weekend days compare with working days?
Weekend days are a little over a quarter of the year. In 2026 there are 104 weekend days and 261 weekdays, which are the days from Monday to Friday. 104 ÷ 365 is 28.5%.
Public holidays add to the days off. The United States has 11 federal holidays, and in 2026 each one gives federal workers a weekday off. The dates are on the government’s own list. A person who gets all of them has 104 + 11 = 115 days off in 2026, before any vacation. That leaves 250 working days.

In hours
How many hours are in a year of weekends?
A year of weekends has 2,496 hours: 104 weekend days × 24 hours. One weekend is 48 hours.
Sleep takes the largest part of those hours. The American Time Use Survey is a yearly study from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. It asks people age 15 and over across the United States what they did the day before, one activity at a time. In 2025, people slept 9.68 hours on an average weekend day. Over 104 weekend days that is about 1,007 hours of sleep, which leaves about 1,489 hours awake.
The table multiplies each of the survey’s weekend averages by 104. The survey counts a few public holidays together with Saturdays and Sundays, and it averages everyone, whether they work on weekends or not.
| Activity | Hours a day | Hours in a year of weekends |
|---|---|---|
| SleepingIncludes naps and time awake in bed | 9.68 | 1,007 |
| Leisure and sports | 6.48 | 674 |

Your own weekends
How to see where your own weekends go.
The survey’s figures are an average over everyone, and your own weekends may look nothing like them. To see yours, write down what you did on Saturday and on Sunday, in plain words, and add up the hours. Doing this every day is called time journaling.
For a quick first picture, the Where did my week go? calculator turns one usual day into a week of hours. What is left of this year is on how many weeks are left in the year.
A weekend goes by quickly, and by Monday it is hard to say what the two days were spent on.
It helps to have the hours counted from a few words you write or say about your day, so there is no timer to start on a day off. Most journaling apps ask how the weekend felt. They do not add up how many of its hours went to rest, to other people or to your phone.
One app built for this is Think in Numbers, a smart journaling app with time tracking built in.
You write or say your day in your own words, as it happens or all at once. The app reads what you wrote and counts the hours that went to each part of it: sleep, time with people, chores, exercise, your phone, and the time you never mentioned (shown as unaccounted). Then it shows those hours over days and weeks. So you can compare one weekend with the next, and see how many hours of each one went to each thing.
