The example’s life in weeks, a square for each week
lived this week
1,356 squares are filled in. A row is 52 weeks, a day or two short of a year, and the rows come in groups of ten.
The example has lived 9,497 days: 1,356 weeks and 5 days.
The count uses the date on your device, and it runs in your browser. Your birth date is not sent anywhere.
The count
How the days you have been alive are counted.
The days you have been alive are the days from your birth date to today. The calculator counts them on the calendar, one by one, so every leap day is in the count.
You can check it with a short sum. Take a person born on and count on . That is 26 years, and 26 × 365 = 9,490 days. Seven of those years had a leap day, so 9,490 + 7 = 9,497 days.
Weeks are the days divided by 7: 9,497 ÷ 7 = 1,356 weeks, with 5 days over. Hours are the days times 24: 9,497 × 24 = 227,928 hours. The time of day you were born is not counted, so the hours can be off by up to one day.
By age
How many days old are you at each age?
A person who turns 30 has lived about 10,958 days. The table gives the days, weeks and hours on ten birthdays, for the same example person born on . A person born on another date has the same count or one day fewer, because of where the leap days fall.
Day 10,000 comes at age 27. The example person reaches it 138 days after that birthday.
| Birthday | Days lived | Whole weeks | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 366 | 52 | 8,784 |
| 10 | 3,653 | 521 | 87,672 |
| 18 | 6,575 | 939 | 157,800 |
| 21 | 7,671 | 1,095 | 184,104 |
| 30 | 10,958 | 1,565 | 262,992 |
| 40 | 14,610 | 2,087 | 350,640 |
| 50 | 18,263 | 2,609 | 438,312 |
| 65 | 23,742 | 3,391 | 569,808 |
| 80 | 29,220 | 4,174 | 701,280 |
| 100 | 36,525 | 5,217 | 876,600 |
Weeks are the days ÷ 7, with the days over left out. Hours are the days × 24.
A round number
What does 4,000 weeks mean?
Four thousand weeks is about the length of a life of eighty years. The figure comes from Oliver Burkeman’s book Four Thousand Weeks. On his page for the book he writes that a person who lives to be 80 will have had about 4,000 weeks.
The exact sum is a little more. 80 years × 52 weeks = 4,160 weeks. Counted on the calendar, eighty years are 29,220 days, which is 4,174 weeks and 2 days.
Eighty is only a round number. Nobody knows how long they will live. So the grid on this page starts with only the weeks already lived.
The grid
How to read a life in weeks.
A life in weeks is a grid with one square for each week of a life. On this page each row has 52 squares, which is one year less a day or two. A filled square is a week that has been lived. The square with a ring is this week.
The grid stops at the row you have reached, because it is a count of what you have lived and not a countdown. If you want a longer grid, you can choose 80, 90 or 100 rows. Those are round numbers to draw with. They are not a forecast for you or for anyone.
Rows of 52 weeks are a little shorter than years. Eighty rows are 100 days short of eighty years.
Your own days
How to see where your days go.
The calculator counts your days, but it cannot tell you what you did with them. That comes from writing a day down while you still remember it: what you did, and for about how long. Doing this every day is called time journaling.
For shorter stretches of time, see how many days are left in this year, how many weeks are in a year and the hours to days converter.
A count of days says how many you have had. It does not say where the hours of any one of them went.
It helps to have the hours counted from a few words you write or say about your day, with no timer to start. Most journaling apps ask how a day felt. They do not add up where its hours went.
One app built for this is Think in Numbers, a smart journaling app with time tracking built in.
You write or say your day in your own words, as it happens or all at once. The app reads what you wrote and counts the hours that went to each part of it: work, sleep, time with people, exercise, your phone, and the time you never mentioned (shown as unaccounted). Then it shows those hours over days and weeks. So you can look back at any week and see where its hours went.
For iPhone and Android. Try it on your own day before you pay.

Questions
Questions people ask.
How many days have I been alive?
Count the days from your birth date to today. For a quick estimate, multiply your age by 365 and add one day for every four years, for the leap days. The calculator on this page counts the days on the calendar, so the answer is exact.
How many weeks are in 80 years?
Eighty years are 4,174 weeks and 2 days, counted on the calendar: 29,220 days divided by 7. The short sum, 80 years times 52 weeks, gives 4,160. Either way it is a little more than 4,000 weeks.
How old is a person who is 10,000 days old?
A person who is 10,000 days old is 27 years old. Day 10,000 comes about 138 days after that birthday. The calculator shows the date of your own next round number of days.
Why does the grid stop at the weeks I have lived?
The grid is a count of what you have lived, not a countdown, and nobody knows how long they will live. If you want a longer grid you can choose 80, 90 or 100 rows. Those are round numbers to draw with, not a forecast.
Is my birth date saved or sent anywhere?
Your birth date is never sent anywhere: the calculator runs in your browser. Nothing is kept unless you turn on Remember. Then your birth date and the grid length are saved in this browser only, and Forget deletes them.
How do I keep track of how I spend my days?
A notebook works: each evening, write down what you did that day and about how long each thing took. A notes app does the same job. It helps if the hours get added up for you, so one week can be set beside the next. One app built for this is Think in Numbers, a smart journaling app with time tracking built in. Think in Numbers counts the hours of each day from what you write or say about it, and shows them over days and weeks.
Try it on my day.
